چکیده

[1] Changes in gravity and/or surface deformation are often associated with volcanic activity. Usually, bodies with simple geometry (e.g., point sources, prolate or oblate spheroids) are used to model these signals considering anomalous mass and/or pressure variations. We present a new method for the simultaneous, nonlinear inversion of gravity changes and surface deformation using bodies with a free geometry. Assuming simple homogenous elastic conditions, the method determines a general geometrical configuration of pressure and density sources. These sources are described as an aggregate of pressure and density point sources, fitting the whole data set (given some regularity conditions). The approach works in a growth step‐by‐step process that allows us to build very general geometrical configurations. The methodology is validated against an ellipsoidal body with anomalous pressure and a parallelepiped body with anomalous density, buried in an elastic medium. The simultaneous inversion of deformation and gravity values permits a good reconstruction of the assumed bodies. Finally, the inversion method is applied to the interpretation of gravity, leveling, and interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) data from the volcanic area of Campi Flegrei (Italy) for the period 1992–2000. For this period, a model with no significant mass change and an extended decreasing pressure region satisfactorily fits the data. The pressure source is located at about ∼1500 m depth, and it is interpreted as corresponding to the dynamics of the shallow (depth 1–2 km) hydrothermal system confined to the caldera fill materials.

Automatic estimation of regularization parameter by active constraint balancing method for 3D inversion of gravity data

Gravity data inversion is one of the important steps in the interpretation of practical gravity data. The inversion result can be obtained by minimization of the Tikhonov objective function. The determination of an optimal regularization parameter is highly important in the gravity data inversion. In this work, an attempt was made to use the active constrain balancing (ACB) method to select the...

Non-linear stochastic inversion of regional Bouguer anomalies by means of Particle Swarm Optimization: Application to the Zagros Mountains

Estimating the lateral depth variations of the Earth’s crust from gravity data is a non-linear ill-posed problem. The ill-posedness of the problem is due to the presence of noise in the data, and also the non-uniqueness of the problem. Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) is a stochastic population-based optimizer, originally inspired by the social behavior of fish schools and bird flocks. PSO is ...

Inversion of Gravity Data by Constrained Nonlinear Optimization based on nonlinear Programming Techniques for Mapping Bedrock Topography

A constrained nonlinear optimization method based on nonlinear programming techniques has been applied to map geometry of bedrock of sedimentary basins by inversion of gravity anomaly data. In the inversion, the applying model is a 2-D model that is composed of a set of juxtaposed prisms whose lower depths have been considered as unknown model parameters. The applied inversion method is a nonli...

Dispersion of Torsional Surface Wave in a Pre-Stressed Heterogeneous Layer Sandwiched Between Anisotropic Porous Half-Spaces Under Gravity

The study of surface waves in a layered media has their viable application in geophysical prospecting. This paper presents an analytical study on the dispersion of torsional surface wave in a pre-stressed heterogeneous layer sandwiched between a pre-stressed anisotropic porous semi-infinite medium and gravitating anisotropic porous half-space. The non-homogeneity within the intermediate layer a...

2D inversion of gravity data in bedrock identification (case study: a part of Qotrum plain in Yazd province)

Introduction The gravity method measures the vertical component of the acceleration at the Earth’s surface. The earth’s gravity field is affected by the density of different rocks and structures. Therefore, this method can be used in mineral exploration or studying the subsurface cavities and structures such as bedrocks, channels, and dikes. Inverse modeling is useful in understanding the p...
